Bulgarian history: Commemorations of the Battle of Achelous and Shipka Pass
Historical commemorations highlight significant military milestones in Bulgarian history. On August 20, 917, Tsar Simeon achieved a major victory against Byzantine forces at the Battle of Achelous near the Achelous River. This victory, involving massive armies, solidified Bulgaria's position as a dominant leader in the Balkans.
On August 21, 1877, intense fighting commenced at the Shipka Pass during the Russo-Turkish War. Bulgarian volunteers fought alongside Russian forces to defend key positions, including Eagle's Nest, against Ottoman troops led by commanders such as Shakir Pasha and Suleiman Pasha.
