Bulgarian history: Revolutionary Spiro Dzherov and the restoration of Prince Battenberg

Historical accounts highlight significant figures and events in Bulgarian history. Spiro Dzherov, also known as Makedonski, was a prominent revolutionary born around 1834–1835 in Bitola. Following a failed conspiracy in Bitola in 1862 that led to his imprisonment, he participated in the Cretan Revolt between 1866 and 1869 before returning to organize further uprisings in the Bitola and Kruševo regions.

In political history, August 16, 1886, marked a turning point when troops from Plovdiv entered Sofia to restore Prince Alexander I Battenberg to the throne. This movement followed a coup on August 9 and was organized by Stefan Stambolov and supported by the Plovdiv garrison commander, S. Mutkurov. Although the counter-coup successfully returned the Prince to power, Battenberg eventually abdicated on August 25, 1886, after failing to secure reconciliation with the Russian Emperor, leading to the establishment of a regency.
