Bulgarian Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev Announces New Road Safety Measures
Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev highlighted serious shortcomings in Bulgaria’s road infrastructure, noting that guardrails (mantinels) often use improperly marked bolts and that many road surfaces have low adhesion, which can lead to fatal accidents. He called road safety a national priority and said multiple ministries are cooperating on comprehensive reforms.
The minister announced legislative proposals to restrict heavy‑truck traffic in the left lane of motorways, tighten rules for high‑risk drivers, and expand the use of electronic traffic tickets. He also said camera systems will be linked to automatically generate fines and that toll‑gate cameras will be upgraded to detect dangerous maneuvers, allowing police to intervene before accidents occur.
