Supreme Judicial Council to vote on acting Prosecutor General

The Prosecutor's College of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) has unanimously proposed Deputy Prosecutor General Magdalena Lazarova-Prodanova as the sole candidate for acting Prosecutor General of Bulgaria. The proposal will now move to the SJC Plenum for a final vote.

This decision follows a request from Justice Minister Nikolay Naydenov, who urged the College to provide a competitive selection process with multiple candidates and clear visions for the institution. Naydenov argued against using seniority as the primary criterion and called for a transparent process to restore public trust. He noted that the current acting term for Vanya Stefanova expires on October 22.

Despite the Minister's call for competition, the Prosecutor's College maintained its practice of proposing a single candidate based on seniority. While reports indicated that other officials, including Kamen Mihov, had expressed readiness to serve, the College opted to submit only Lazarova-Prodanova's candidacy. The SJC Plenum, chaired by the Justice Minister, is expected to hold the deciding vote.
