Bulgarian mayors detained in €7 million corruption probe

The mayors of Sungurlare and Belitsa, Dimitar Gavazov and Radoslav Revanski, remain in custody following a decision by the Burgas District Court. The investigation involves allegations of criminal conspiracy to engage in influence peddling related to public procurement contracts worth approximately €7 million in the Sungurlare municipality, including street construction and public building repairs.

Prosecutors allege that Dimitar Gavazov, the mayor of Sungurlare, influenced the municipal commission regarding contractor selection, while Radoslav Revanski, the mayor of Belitsa, assisted with financing. Hristo Shirokov, a regional chairman for the DPS-Novo Nachalo party, is also accused of involvement in the conspiracy. Shirokov is currently under house arrest in a separate case.

way, Iskra Mihaylova, Deputy Chair of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS), stated that representatives of the diplomatic corps and the European Parliament's Committee on Individual Rights have been informed of the cases in Sungurlare and Belitsa. She criticized the actions, suggesting they are politically motivated.
