European Parliament debates Black Sea security following Russian drone attacks

The European Parliament is preparing to vote on a resolution addressing escalating Russian attacks on commercial shipping in the Black Sea. Bulgarian MEPs have called for urgent EU intervention, including the deployment of an EU mission to protect merchant vessels and the establishment of a dedicated fund to support the ports of Varna, Burgas, and Constanta.

Proposed measures include enhanced maritime and satellite surveillance, early warning systems, and drone countermeasures. There is also a push to accelerate the creation of a maritime security center in Varna, which would include a specialized unit for defending against hybrid and cyber threats.

In Bulgaria, public concern is high; a recent survey indicates that 68% of citizens view the Black Sea attacks as a serious threat to national security, with 43% attributing the strikes to Russia. Additionally, MEPs are urging the Bulgarian government to formally join NATO’s anti-drone initiative by October 30.
