Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs travel warning levels

The Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) issues and regularly updates travel warnings to help citizens make informed decisions regarding international travel. These assessments are based on analyses of current situations, future developments, and information exchanged with other European Union member states.

The MFA utilizes a five-level risk scale:

Level 1: No specific recommendations. Standard safety measures should still be followed. Level 2: Increased attention. Travelers are advised to stay informed due to factors such as crime, political tension, or natural disasters. Level 3: Increased risk level. Travel to specific regions is not recommended except when necessary. Level 4: Suspension of travel. Travelers are advised not to travel to the country unless it is an absolute necessity. Level 5: Do not travel and leave the country. This highest level is issued for extreme crises like war or civil conflict, advising citizens to leave as soon as it is safe to do so.

Warnings may be triggered by various factors beyond armed conflict, including forest fires, extreme weather, earthquakes, volcanic activity, mass protests, or terrorist threats.
