Bulgaria corruption probe targets 400 million euro procurement scheme
Bulgarian authorities are investigating a large-scale corruption scheme involving approximately 400 million euros in public procurement contracts for geomembranes. The Ministry of Interior reports that four companies, which appear to be competitors, have secured 99.5% of these contracts. Investigators allege that funds from these contracts were diverted through “cash cow” companies to pay for 36 private flights for politician Delyan Peevski, costing over 5 million euros.
The Ministry of Interior is currently processing 900 corruption-related signals, with over 250 criminal proceedings already initiated by the prosecutor's office. Investigations also highlight suspicious financial activity where low-income individuals allegedly moved millions of leva through banks and exchange offices during the currency conversion period.
In response to these findings, Acting Prosecutor General Vanya Stefanova has requested a full report from the State Agency for National Security (DANS). Meanwhile, Ivan Yordanov, Bulgaria's ambassador to the UAE, has denied that his family or his father's business interests are linked to the investigated flight payments or the procurement scandals.
