Bulgarian Mountain Rescue Service issues snow safety warnings
The Mountain Rescue Service (PSS) has issued warnings for tourists following significant snow accumulation in the high altitudes of Bulgaria's Pirin, Rila, Rhodope, and Vitosha mountains. At elevations above 1,500 meters, snow depth has reached between 20 and 25 centimeters in some areas, with more snowfall expected in the coming days.
Alexander Veskov, Director of PSS Blagoevgrad, warned that daytime warming followed by nighttime freezing creates hazardous conditions. Key risks identified include fog, getting lost, slips, icing, and the danger of falling into crevices between rocks hidden under the snow.
Veskov advised hikers to use appropriate winter gear, such as crampons and ice axes, to travel in groups rather than alone, noting that companion assistance is life-saving in 90% of cases. He also recommended that tourists obtain mountain insurance to cover rescue operation costs. No serious incidents have been reported recently.
