Bulgarian Prosecutor General seeks immunity waiver for MP Bozhidar Bozhanov

Acting Prosecutor General Vanya Stefanova has submitted a request to the 52nd National Assembly to strip MP Bozhidar Bozhanov of his parliamentary immunity. The request, initiated by the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office, aims to resume criminal proceedings against Bozhanov in the Sofia City Court.

Bozhanov, a deputy chairperson of a parliamentary group, is accused of a crime in office under Article 282 of the Penal Code. The indictment, filed on October 1, 2025, alleges that during his tenure as Minister of Electronic Governance between May and June 2022, he violated duties related to the Law on Protection of Classified Information and internal public procurement rules.

Criminal proceedings were suspended on September 1, 2026, following Bozhanov's acquisition of immunity after being sworn in as a deputy on April 30, 2026. Bozhanov has dismissed the prosecution as “order-made” and an attempt to interfere in the upcoming presidential elections, claiming the move is politically motivated. He stated he intends to waive his immunity voluntarily to expedite the case.
