Bulgarian nationals accused of Russian espionage in UK and Germany
Allegations of Russian intelligence operations involving Bulgarian nationals have surfaced in Europe. A group of Bulgarian emigrants in the United Kingdom has been accused of espionage on behalf of Russia, including activities targeting other Bulgarians and preparations for a contract killing.
In Germany, a Bulgarian man and woman are accused of carrying out a GRU task involving the deployment of an incendiary device against a military contractor in Munich. A third Bulgarian national was also detained in Munich in connection with the attack on the weapons firm, though he is not currently a suspect.
Commentary suggests these incidents reflect a broader issue of pro-Russian influence and anti-European sentiment being exported from Bulgaria. Critics argue that a lack of decisive domestic investigation into Russian networks has allowed these activities to manifest through the Bulgarian diaspora across Europe.
