Bulgarian officials to cut utilities and demolish illegal buildings in Varna
Bulgarian regional minister Ivan Shishkov has announced state actions to cut off water and electricity to buildings in the so-called ‘illegal city’ located in the Baba Alino area near Varna. The move follows inspections by regional development officials, local authorities, and utility representatives.
Shishkov stated that the government is seeking technical solutions to disconnect the illegal structures without affecting legal properties. He also announced a procedure to replace the manager of the local water utility company (ViK), suggesting that current management has been uncooperative in enforcing the law. The minister noted that approximately 230 building acts were issued for structures lacking detailed development plans and suggested potential corruption in the construction process.
In addition to utility disconnections, authorities are preparing new orders for the demolition of the illegal buildings. Varna Mayor Blagomir Kotsev participated in the site inspection, and discussions continue regarding the validity of local development plans used to justify the construction.
