Bulgarian Ombudsman supports April spring break for students
Bulgarian Ombudsman Velislava Delcheva has expressed support for a proposal to schedule the spring vacation for the 2026-2027 school year from April 3 to April 11, 2027. This stands in opposition to an alternative proposal to hold the break from April 30 to May 9, 2027.
In a statement sent to Minister of Education and Science Prof. Georgi Valchev, Delcheva argued that moving the vacation to May would fail to provide a necessary balance between study time and rest. She noted that under the alternative schedule, students would face an intensive four-month period of continuous instruction from January 3 to April 30, 2027, without a significant break.
Delcheva warned that such a prolonged period without rest could negatively impact students' physical, mental, and emotional health, leading to fatigue, decreased concentration, and lower motivation. She further noted that May already contains non-school days due to state exams and public holidays, which would make the academic process fragmented. She emphasized that the best interests of the child should guide decisions regarding school scheduling.
