Bulgarian organ donor saves three lives in Romania
A 54-year-old woman from Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria, has provided a second chance at life for three Romanian citizens through organ donation. Following her brain death at the Dr. Stefan Cherkezov Hospital on October 1, her family made the decision to donate her organs.
Because no suitable recipients were found within Bulgaria, the donation was facilitated through a 2021 cooperation memorandum between Bulgaria and Romania. The procedure took place on October 2 at the Fundeni Clinical Institute in Romania, where medical teams performed two kidney transplants and one liver transplant.
Romanian medical specialists expressed gratitude to their Bulgarian partners and the medical teams involved, specifically noting the rapid response of SABIF and CTS Bucharest. Dr. Sibila Marinova, the donation coordinator for the North Central region, and the hospital leadership also extended their thanks to the donor's family for their noble decision.
