Bulgarian Orthodox Church commemorates Icon of Joy of All Who Sorrow and Martyr Areta
The Bulgarian Orthodox Church observes the feast day of the icon of the Mother of God, 'Joy of All Who Sorrow,' and commemorates the memory of Saint Martyr Areta on October 24.
The icon's veneration is linked to a 1688 miracle in Moscow, where Evfimiya, the sister of Patriarch Joachim, was reportedly healed of a terminal illness after praying to the Mother of God. The icon is traditionally sought by those experiencing illness, grief, or mental distress.
Additionally, the Church honors Saint Areta, a Christian leader from Najran in Southern Arabia. Historical accounts describe Areta as a pious man who, along with a group of 240 followers, faced persecution by an Omrite king. Following their refusal to renounce Christianity and adopt Jewish customs, the group was executed by decapitation.
