Bulgarian Orthodox Church commemorates Saint Hilarion the Great and Saint Hilarion of Meglen

On October 21, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of Saint Hilarion the Great and Saint Hilarion, Bishop of Meglen.

Saint Hilarion the Great, born near Gaza in the 3rd century, is recognized as a founder of monasticism in Palestine. After converting to Christianity in Alexandria, he dedicated his life to asceticism, prayer, and fasting in the desert. He was known for his spiritual wisdom and the gift of healing, which led to the establishment of numerous monastic communities. He passed away on the island of Cyprus around 371 AD.

Saint Hilarion of Meglen was a 12th-century Bulgarian church figure and bishop of Meglen (modern-day Almopia, Greece). He was a prominent pastor known for his dedication to the faith and enlightenment of his flock. His relics are preserved in Tarnovo, Bulgaria, and he remains a significant figure in the Bulgarian medieval church tradition.

Today is the name day for individuals named Hilarion, Larion, Ilariy, and Ilaria.
