Bulgarian Parliament begins vetting for Supreme Judicial Council candidates

The Legal Affairs Committee of the Bulgarian National Assembly has begun the verification process for candidates nominated for the parliamentary quota of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC). A total of 20 candidates are competing for 11 available positions: six seats in the Judicial College and five seats in the Prosecutor's College.

The committee is tasked with reviewing documentation to ensure all nominees meet the necessary legal requirements and professional standards. Candidates who pass this initial screening will proceed to public hearings, where they will present their work concepts and answer questions from lawmakers. Following these hearings, the committee will prepare a reasoned report on the professional and moral qualities of the candidates before submitting them for a final vote in the plenary session.

To be elected from the parliamentary quota, each candidate requires a two-thirds majority of the National Assembly, which equates to at least 160 votes.
