Bulgarian Parliament debates medical salary increases

The Bulgarian National Assembly is debating legislative proposals aimed at increasing minimum wages for medical professionals to prevent brain drain. A proposal from the 'We Continue the Change' party suggests linking base salaries to the national average gross wage. Specifically, the plan proposes that non-specialized doctors, dentists, and pharmacists receive at least 150% of the average gross wage, while nurses, midwives, and other healthcare specialists would receive between 125% and 140%.

The ruling majority has expressed opposition to this specific mechanism, citing potential financial strain on municipal hospitals and the risk of creating wage disparities between young specialists and experienced doctors with decades of service. Instead, 'Progressive Bulgaria' has advocated for a different mechanism focused on a more equitable distribution of funds from the health insurance fund.

The debate is part of an ongoing legislative process, and the inclusion of these bills on the agenda does not guarantee their immediate passage. Further discussions in committees and subsequent votes will be required to finalize any changes to healthcare compensation laws.
