Bulgarian Parliament fails to convene hearing on drug trafficker pardon

The Bulgarian National Assembly failed to hold an extraordinary session intended to investigate the 2022 pardon of Ognyan Atanasov, known as ‘the Petrich Escobar’. The session, requested by the ‘We Continue the Change’ party alongside GERB and ‘Democratic Bulgaria’, lacked the necessary quorum to proceed.

The hearing aimed to question officials from the Ministry of Interior, the State Agency for National Security (SANS), and prison administration regarding the medical justifications used for the pardon. Lawmakers sought to clarify the validity of medical reports, potential pressure on doctors, and possible links between Atanasov and security services.

The Presidency has denied allegations of withholding information, stating it has responded to 14 public information requests and that all relevant documentation has been forwarded to the prosecutor's office for investigation. The administration maintains that the pardon followed all legal protocols based on the convict's severe health condition.
