Bulgarian Parliament votes on National Health Insurance Fund leadership
The Bulgarian Parliament is set to vote on the leadership of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), which manages a multi-billion lev budget. The election follows the July 2 termination of the mandates of former director Dr. Petko Stefanovski and deputy director Prof. Momchil Mavrov.
Two candidates are competing for the position of director: Stanimir Mihailov, nominated by the 'We Continue the Change' group, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vladimir Daskalov, nominated by 'Progressive Bulgaria'. Mihailov has focused his platform on optimizing hospital costs and reducing patient co-payments. Daskalov has emphasized full digitalization of the NHIF and stricter financial controls.
For the role of deputy director, there is a single candidate, Zdravko Shushkov, nominated by 'Progressive Bulgaria'. The elected officials will serve a five-year term.
