Bulgarian parties propose environmental and waste management reforms

Bulgarian political parties are proposing legislative changes to environmental management. Progressive Bulgaria has announced steps to reform waste management through amendments to the Waste Management Act. The goal is to increase market competition and reduce costs for citizens by lowering financial and administrative barriers for recycling organizations. Specifically, the changes aim to reduce required guarantees by half and lower the minimum population coverage requirement from 500,000 to 250,000 people.

Separately, Democratic Bulgaria has proposed amendments to the Clean Air Act. The proposal seeks to introduce clearer rules for the placement, inspection, and modification of stations within the national air quality monitoring system. The party advocates for public justification for the location of each station and requires that the network be reviewed every five years following public consultation. The goal is to ensure data reflects both high-pollutant concentrations and general population exposure.
