Bulgarian police dismantle counterfeit euro scheme and robbery plot

Bulgarian authorities have dismantled a criminal scheme involving the circulation of counterfeit 100 euro banknotes and a planned violent robbery. The operation was led by the Economic Police Department in Plovdiv, with support from regional directorates in Vidin, Pleven, and Sliven.

The investigation began in late June after reports surfaced regarding fake 100 euro notes being used in grocery stores, restaurants, and gas stations across Plovdiv and the Karlovo region. Police identified three suspects from Pleven who traveled in a vehicle with fraudulent license plates.

During the investigation, police uncovered a secondary plot involving a 32-year-old suspect who planned to rob a private home in Vidin. The target was a mother and son believed to be holding 50,000 euros. The suspects allegedly planned to incapacitate the victims using sleeping pills to facilitate the theft.

Four individuals have been detained, and three face formal charges. A fifth suspect remains at large. Authorities seized illegal firearms with erased serial numbers, ammunition, and various medications during searches.
