Bulgarian police dismantle organized migrant trafficking group

Bulgarian law enforcement authorities dismantled an organized criminal group involved in human trafficking during a large-scale operation in Sofia on October 1. The joint action, conducted by the Border Police and National Police directorates, resulted in the detention of 22 individuals, including Bulgarian and foreign nationals. Most of those detained are citizens of Syria, with others from Iran, Iraq, Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia.

Investigators identified several smuggling routes and methods. The group transported migrants from Turkey through Bulgaria toward European Union destinations, specifically targeting routes toward Romania and Serbia. To evade detection, the group utilized vehicles equipped with specially constructed hidden compartments and moved migrants through both green borders and official checkpoints.

In addition to transportation, the group managed housing for migrants in various apartments across Sofia. Authorities have documented 10 separate trafficking cases and have charged seven individuals with participation in the organized crime group. The investigation also links the group to a May incident in Burgas, where a vehicle carrying migrants crashed from an overpass following a police pursuit.
