Bulgarian political leaders discuss presidential elections and reforms

Political leaders in Bulgaria are addressing domestic policy challenges and upcoming presidential elections. Former Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev analyzed the current administration, noting that while the 2026 budget revealed the reality of the country's finances, there was a lack of boldness in addressing the budget deficit. He emphasized that the 2027 budget will be a critical test for the government, which must foster economic growth and manage the deficit.

Stanishev also discussed the presidential candidacy of Iliyana Yotova, predicting she will select a strong vice-presidential candidate and focus on diplomacy and social cohesion to bridge internal divides. He noted her previous engagement with EU Green Transition initiatives.

Meanwhile, Ivan Angelov, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, stated that the Progressive Bulgaria party aims to dismantle the political-oligarchic model by limiting access to state institutions. Angelov defended Prime Minister Rumen Radev regarding his visit to flood-affected Strumyani, clarifying that the Prime Minister was present to support recovery efforts and had ordered investigations into police conduct following an incident involving a local woman during the visit.
