Bulgarian politicians criticize Interior Minister over security and road safety
Bulgarian political figures have launched sharp criticisms against Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev regarding security and public safety.
DPS leader Delyan Peevski dismissed claims made by Demerdzhiev linking a surge in bomb threats against institutions—including courts, airports, and schools—to parliamentary hearings regarding Peevski’s flights. Peevski accused the government of attempting to divert attention from corruption and economic issues, such as rising prices, by targeting him.
Separately, DPS MP and former Interior Minister Kalin Stoyanov criticized the Ministry of Interior over a significant rise in road fatalities. Official data indicates that 388 people have died in traffic accidents in Bulgaria since the beginning of the year, with 19 deaths recorded since early October alone. Stoyanov accused the ministry's leadership of failing to implement effective prevention and control measures, describing the ministry as ‘completely paralyzed’ and prioritizing political messaging over public safety.
