Professor Georgi Stefanov Georgiev, a prominent Bulgarian scientist specializing in polymer chemistry, has passed away at the age of 85. His death was officially announced by Sofia University ‘St. Kliment Ohridski’.
Born in Dolno Sahrane, Professor Georgiev graduated with honors from Lomonosov Moscow State University, where he also completed his doctoral studies in complex-radical homo- and copolymerization. His professional career was deeply rooted in Sofia University, where he served as an assistant, associate professor, deputy dean, and eventually professor.
In 1984, he founded the Laboratory of Water-Soluble Polymers, Polyelectrolytes, and Biopolymers, which he led for several decades. His scientific contributions include the creation of the Georgiev-Zubov model for alternating copolymerization and the generalized Ω-model for complex-radical polymerization. He was the author of over 320 scientific publications and established the Master's program in Polymers at the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy.
