Bulgarian Prosecutor seeks to lift immunity of MP Dimitar Avramov

Acting Prosecutor General Vanya Stefanova has submitted a request to the 52nd National Assembly to strip Dimitar Avramov, a Member of Parliament from the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS), of his parliamentary immunity. The request follows a proposal from a prosecutor at the Supreme Cassation Prosecutor's Office to allow criminal proceedings against Avramov to continue before the Supreme Cassation Court.

The legal action stems from a case involving influence peddling. In October 2025, the Sofia Appellate Court overturned an earlier acquittal from the Sofia City Court, finding Avramov guilty of influence peddling in complicity with another individual. While the conviction was upheld in its punitive aspects, the decision was appealed to the Supreme Cassation Court.

Avramov was declared an elected representative by the Central Election Commission in April 2026 and assumed parliamentary immunity upon taking his oath on April 30. Consequently, the criminal proceedings cannot proceed at the Supreme Cassation Court without either the National Assembly's permission or Avramov's written consent.
