Bulgarian Prosecutor's Office ordered to pay compensation to Alexey Petrov's heirs

The heirs of Alexey Petrov, including his widow and daughter, have won a final legal battle against the Bulgarian Prosecutor's Office. The Supreme Court of Cassation ruled that the state must pay a total of 64,000 BGN in compensation for wrongful accusations made against the former special forces officer.

The court awarded 40,000 BGN for non-pecuniary and pecuniary damages. Additionally, the Prosecutor's Office is liable for interest accrued since February 8, 2020, when Petrov originally filed the lawsuit. As of current calculations, these interests amount to approximately 49,517 BGN, nearly doubling the total payout. The state is also ordered to cover the costs of the civil proceedings.

Petrov had been accused of money laundering and misappropriating funds between 2006 and 2015, charges that were later dismissed following an acquittal. The legal proceedings continued posthumously after Petrov was shot and killed in Sofia in August 2023.
