Bulgarian Red Cross marks 148th anniversary

The Bulgarian Red Cross (BRC) is celebrating its 148th anniversary, marked by various initiatives to promote its humanitarian activities. The organization's history in Bulgaria dates back to October 25, 1878, when the first Red Cross society was established in Sliven under the presidency of Metropolitan Seraphim.

In the Plovdiv region, the organization maintains a strong presence with over 15,000 supporters, including a high percentage of permanent volunteers. The Plovdiv structure, founded in 1879, has historically played a significant role in regional healthcare, including the establishment of the first major hospital in Eastern Rumelia and providing care during the First World War.

Currently, the BRC provides material and psychological assistance to more than 50,000 people annually in the Plovdiv region. Looking toward 2026, the organization plans to expand its humanitarian aid, mental health initiatives, disease prevention programs, and projects aimed at addressing aggression and violence.
