Bulgarian scientists begin DNA study of Tsar Samuel's remains

Bulgarian scientists have launched a comprehensive research program to study the remains of Tsar Samuel and members of his medieval royal family. Following the official repatriation of the remains from Greece after decades of negotiations, researchers at the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (NAIM-BAS) will conduct detailed genetic, chemical, and isotopic analyses.

The scientific program aims to determine the age, biological origins, and kinship of the individuals. Key objectives include using ancient DNA to identify biological connections through maternal (mitochondrial DNA) and paternal (Y-chromosome) lines. Scientists also hope to identify specific relatives, such as Samuel’s son Gavril Radomir or his nephew Ivan Vladislav.

In addition to DNA testing, the study will involve radiocarbon dating of the sarcophagi and a digital reconstruction of Tsar Samuel’s head based on anthropological data. Experts estimate that the full research process will take between two and three years to complete.
