Bulgarian singer Dara's 2019 interview with Slavi Trifonov sparks criticism

A 2019 television interview of pop singer Darina Yotova, known as Dara, on Slavi Trifonov’s bTV show resurfaced online, drawing fresh public attention. In the clip, the 50‑year‑old host asks Dara a series of personal questions about her physical traits and family background, continuing to probe despite her attempts to steer the conversation away. Viewers described the exchange as a textbook example of institutional sexism and an abuse of on‑air power, citing the host’s intrusive tone and stereotypical remarks.

Dara responded that her attributes are a matter of genetics and emphasized that women can be complete individuals and leaders regardless of marital status. Trifonov reacted sharply, replying, “Leaderka – there is no such word!” The rebroadcast has reignited debate in Bulgaria over gender bias in media and the appropriateness of the host’s interviewing style.
