Bulgaria initiates elections for Supreme Judicial Council and court heads

Bulgaria is undergoing significant judicial restructuring as procedures begin to elect a new Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) and fill vacancies across the country's court system.

Boyko Atanasov, an investigator with the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office and over 19 years of experience, has officially entered the race for the SJC from the investigators' quota. Atanasov stated his candidacy is driven by a moral commitment to improve judicial independence and morale.

Amidst these elections, Justice Minister Nikolay Naydenov raised concerns regarding potential political regrouping within the office of Borislav Sarafov. Naydenov emphasized the need to evaluate candidates based on professional merit to avoid placing unqualified individuals in the council, noting that the current SJC and Inspectorate are operating with expired mandates.

Simultaneously, the SJC's Judges' College has opened procedures to select presidents for 30 courts. Many of these positions, particularly in smaller municipalities, have remained vacant for years due to the administrative burden and lack of incentives, with some locations seeing over 20 unsuccessful attempts to appoint leadership.
