Bulgarian Tourist Union marks 131 years of organized tourism

Bulgaria marks the anniversary of its organized tourism movement, which began on August 27, 1895. On that date, writer and public figure Aleko Konstantinov led approximately 300 people from Sofia to Cherni Vrah on Vitosha mountain, an event that led to the establishment of the Bulgarian Tourist Union (BTS).

The Bulgarian Tourist Union is an independent, non-governmental organization that promotes hiking, mountaineering, orienteering, and environmental activities. The organization manages 410 shelter sites, including 219 mountain huts and various campsites.

To celebrate the 131st anniversary, a national tourist assembly will be held on Cherni Vrah on the last Sunday of August. This year's festivities also highlight the 60th anniversary of the ‘Discover Bulgaria – 100 National Tourist Sites’ movement, an initiative aimed at promoting the country's natural and cultural heritage.
