Bulgarian Youth Red Cross celebrates 105 years
The Bulgarian Youth Red Cross (BYRC) is celebrating its 105th anniversary. The organization originated on October 14, 1921, as a student initiative by a group of pupils from the Knyaz Boris Boys' High School in Ruse.
Throughout its history, the movement has navigated significant political shifts. In 1942, due to Bulgaria's collaboration with Nazi Germany, the organization was forced to become a collective member of the official youth organization 'Branik', losing its independence. Its autonomy was restored in 1945 following World War II, led by prominent Bulgarian physicians such as Dr. Ivan Kesyakov, Prof. Dr. Dimitar Orahotsev, and Dr. Georgi Angelov.
Today, the BYRC operates as part of the Bulgarian Red Cross, focusing on public health, humanitarian aid, and first aid training. Volunteers engage in healthy lifestyle initiatives, disaster response, and support for vulnerable populations, providing young people with practical skills and teamwork experience.
