Bulgaria's Cabinet Removes DANS Deputy Chairman Georgi Georgiev

On 29 July 2026 the Bulgarian Council of Ministers voted to relieve Georgi Georgiev of his post as deputy chairman of the State Agency for National Security (DANS). The decision follows Georgiev’s own request to end his mandate early; he had been appointed in June 2024 by the caretaker government of Dimitar Glavchev for a term lasting until July 2028.

The move coincides with the reappointment of Plamen Tonchev as DANS head, supported by the governing parties. After the reshuffle DANS is left with only one deputy, Stanko Stanev, who was appointed in May by President Rumen Radev. Stanev’s security clearance was contested by opposition figures but defended by the president. A second deputy, Deyan Denchev, was also dismissed in May. The cabinet simultaneously approved its legislative programme for the July‑December 2026 period, comprising 55 draft laws aligned with Bulgaria’s EU commitments and national policy plans.
