Iliana Yotova launches presidential bid, Andrey Gyurov weighs entry
Iliana Yotova announced her candidacy for the Bulgarian presidential election slated for autumn 2026, becoming the first major figure to enter the race and setting the agenda for the campaign. Her early announcement prompted commentary from party leaders and analysts, who noted that other potential candidates have not yet declared their intentions.
Former caretaker prime minister Andrey Gyurov has stated that he has not decided whether to run, emphasizing that the decision must be taken carefully and is not a matter of personal ambition but of a long‑term vision for the country. He said a possible candidacy would be announced publicly when he reaches a firm conclusion.
Leaders of several parties have voiced their positions. Asen Vasilev, head of the "Continue the Change" movement, said Gyurov would be an excellent candidate if he chose to run. Radan Kunev of the Democratic Strength for Bulgaria (DSB) expressed expectations that Gyurov could attract broad support and advocated that any candidacy be presented by an independent initiative committee rather than a party nomination. Boyko Borisov, leader of GERB, described Yotova as an "extremely strong" and experienced contender.
In a separate dispute, Yotova criticized Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova for failing to coordinate with Prime Minister Rumen Radев on a Kyiv declaration, highlighting internal tensions within the government.
