Bulgaria’s ex‑investigator Petyo Petrov (‘Euro’) linked to MI6 amid location hunt

The Bulgarian interior ministry’s secretary, Lubomir Nikolov, said the ministry is cooperating with foreign partner services and has received mixed information about the whereabouts of former investigator Petyo Petrov, known as “Euro”. He noted three possible locations – Thessaloniki, Belgrade or an undisclosed site – and suggested that the British secret service MI6 may be holding him after he surrendered to agents.

Petrov, who headed the capital’s investigation unit, is wanted in connection with a charge from 25 August 2023 and was convicted in May for forging documents, receiving a fine of €2,556. Nikolov rejected claims that Petrov still dominates the prosecutor’s office. Ongoing investigations could be influenced by the pending extradition case of former BBR director Stoyan Mavrodiev, currently detained in Serbia. British intelligence interest is tied to assets linked to Delian Peevski, a figure under UK sanctions.
