Bulgaria's fentanyl lab operation displaces heroin, police seize €300k

Police say fentanyl has almost completely replaced heroin on the Bulgarian drug market, with production occurring inside the country and distribution handled through internal trafficking networks.

A broken illegal laboratory near Sofia is believed to be the only such facility in Bulgaria. A recent raid detained three men at the lab and seven elsewhere, and investigators recovered roughly €300,000 in cash from the suspects' homes.

Authorities have been monitoring the fentanyl network for about four months, tracking shipments to multiple locations. They found no evidence that the domestically produced fentanyl is linked to international trafficking, and no grams have been imported or exported.

According to a criminologist, the lab operates three eight‑hour shifts and submits two daily reports. The chemists are self‑taught, not professional, using simple equipment to manufacture the synthetic opioid.
