Bulgaria's Interior Ministry adopts drone‑aided method for serious road accident investigations

The Ministry of Interior (MVR) announced a new methodology for investigating serious road accidents, which will include detailed photographic documentation of the crash site using drones and other specialised equipment. The protocol also requires assessment of road surface conditions and the technical state of the vehicle involved, aiming to collect comprehensive evidence for subsequent expert analysis.

Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev told parliament that the method will be finalised soon and implemented promptly. He highlighted ongoing issues with weigh‑stations for heavy‑load trucks – only eight are currently operational – and noted that the new system will improve checks on vehicle overload, a factor that can lengthen braking distances and reduce brake efficiency. An inter‑agency working group, led by the Transport Minister, is also addressing the need for additional weigh‑stations and enhancing the capacity of the Automobile Administration to monitor heavy‑vehicle transport.
