Bulgaria's Kozloduy NPP reduces capacity due to low Danube levels

Bulgarian Energy Minister Iva Petrova announced at the Sofia Economic Forum VII that critically low water levels in the Danube River have forced the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant to reduce its capacity for the first time since it began operations.

To mitigate the impact of this situation, Bulgaria has relied on a combination of coal power, renewable energy sources, and battery storage to maintain stability and support the wider region. Petrova emphasized that nuclear energy remains the country's primary choice for energy sector development and confirmed that plans for constructing new units at the Kozloduy site are proceeding under an updated roadmap.

Other industry leaders noted during the forum that small modular reactors represent a significant part of the future energy landscape. Additionally, Bulgartransgaz is working to diversify supply sources and regional infrastructure to avoid the risks associated with relying on single resources or routes during crises.
