Bulgaria President considers security council meeting after EMKO explosions
Bulgarian President Iliana Yotova is considering convening the National Security Advisory Council following a series of explosions and fires at EMKO, a major weapons manufacturer. The President stated that a decision would be made within days, pending initial results from ongoing investigations into the most recent fire near the village of Gorni Varpshta.
EMKO owner Emilian Gebrev has suggested the incidents may be acts of sabotage rather than human error. President Yotova has urged caution, noting that official investigative analyses and expert assessments are still required before making definitive conclusions. She emphasized that the security of such strategic sites is a matter of national importance, particularly as the recent fire occurred less than two kilometers from residential areas.
Presidential candidate Andrey Gyurov has called for an immediate meeting of the Council, characterizing the incidents as a ‘critical threat to national security.’ Gyurov drew parallels between the events in Bulgaria and similar security incidents reported at military and logistics sites in Poland, Czechia, the United Kingdom, and the Baltic states. He has requested that security services, including the Ministry of Interior and intelligence agencies, provide information regarding potential sabotage operations or activities by foreign intelligence networks.
