Bulgaria's tax authority reports 100 violations in summer coastal inspections

The National Revenue Agency (NRA) carried out more than 330 inspections of commercial outlets along the Black Sea coast after the summer campaign began on 29 June. Inspectors identified roughly 100 breaches, meaning about one‑third of the checked premises were non‑compliant. The most common offences were failure to issue cash‑register receipts and discrepancies between reported turnover and cash on hand. Two establishments were sealed after it was discovered they operated without any cash‑register devices.

NRA director of communications Anna Mitova said, "Our main goal is to improve fiscal discipline, encourage voluntary compliance and guarantee a fair competitive environment." She added, "It is a surprise to encounter a trader trying to work without a cash register – this is absolutely prohibited by law."

The agency also examined seasonal labour contracts and monitored price increases linked to Bulgaria’s upcoming euro adoption. Since the start of the year, over 20,000 checks have been performed in collaboration with the Consumer Protection Commission, resulting in more than 1,300 official acts and penalties totalling about €1.7 million, with fines reaching up to €5,000. Consumers can verify the validity of fiscal receipts via the NRA Mobile app and report suspected violations through the NRA information centre.
