Bulkhead CEO argues video game prices are too low for development costs
Industry leaders are debating the economic instability of the video game sector, specifically regarding the gap between rising development costs and stagnant retail prices. Joe Brammer, CEO of Bulkhead and executive producer of the shooter ‘Wardogs’, argues that games are currently too cheap relative to their production costs. He noted that while major titles like ‘GTA 6’ had the opportunity to raise the industry standard for pricing, they did not, perpetuating a cycle of high costs and low margins.
This discussion follows comments from Tim Schafer, founder of Double Fine Productions, who expressed confusion over the recent wave of layoffs, studio closures, and restructuring within the industry. The volatility is attributed in part to the pandemic era, during which companies over-hired to meet surging demand, leading to subsequent workforce reductions as market conditions shifted. Brammer suggested that for the industry to remain sustainable, the cost of games may need to increase.
