Torero Morante de la Puebla injured in Palma de Mallorca, jeopardizing El Puerto commitments
José Antonio Morante de la Puebla suffered a hand injury (a “cogida”) when he entered to kill the fifth bull during a mixed night corrida at the Coliseo Balear in Palma de Mallorca on 31 July 2026. The bull turned him over, causing a five‑centimetre cut in the palm of his right hand between the first and second fingers. He was taken to the arena infirmary, received local anesthesia, the wound was cleaned, and five stitches of monofilament were placed. The medical report signed by Dr Inés Fernández‑Bretón Carrillo described the injury as light, with no tendon damage, and recommended a 48‑hour review and relative rest.
The incident occurred a day before Morante’s historic four‑corrida engagement at the Plaza de Toros de El Puerto de Santa María, as well as a series of other appearances in Marbella, San Sebastián, Málaga, Gijón, Cuenca, Almagro, Almería, Bilbao and San Sebastián de los Reyes. Fellow bullfighters Diego Ventura and Sebastián Castella completed the Palma card, with Castella finishing the bull that injured Morante. Fans expressed concern, but the prognosis suggests Morante may still perform his upcoming commitments.
