Bullitt Mustang stunt car unveiled at Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles

The original 1968 Bullitt Mustang used for stunt work in the Steve McQueen film has been restored and displayed for the first time in public at the Petersen Automotive Museum during the Autogeek Detail Fest. The car, identified as chassis 558, spent decades hidden in Mexico before Ford historian Kevin Marti authenticated it through its VIN and unique filming modifications. World Class Performance & Restorations completed a decade‑long restoration, bringing the vehicle to roughly 95 percent original condition while awaiting a few missing NOS parts.

The Highland‑green Mustang retained its reinforced suspension, four‑speed manual transmission and 390‑cid FE V8 that powered the famous San Francisco chase sequence. Museum officials highlighted the car’s role in cinematic history, noting it endured the jumps and high‑speed runs that defined the film’s iconic chase. The unveiling offers enthusiasts a rare glimpse of the actual stunt car rather than the hero car used for close‑up shots.
