Bumble ends policy requiring women to message first

Bumble has announced a major policy shift, ending its signature rule that required women to initiate conversations first. Since its launch in 2014, the dating app has distinguished itself by allowing only women to send the initial message after a match. Under the new rules, both parties in a match can now send the first message.

The company stated the change responds to evolving user expectations and a desire for more flexibility. A survey conducted by Bumble indicated that approximately 66% of women prefer when men make the initial move, though other data suggests many women still value the ability to decide when a conversation begins. To encourage meaningful interactions, the app will also prompt users to avoid sending overly brief or non-substantive opening messages.

Additionally, Bumble is extending its reply window from 24 hours to 72 hours to combat user fatigue and reduce pressure. The company noted that pilot testing of these features, including in Canada, showed positive results with increased chat initiation and improved user experiences.
