Bun runtime rewritten from Zig to Rust using AI assistance
Bun creator Jarred Sumner has announced a major rewrite of the Bun JavaScript/TypeScript runtime, transitioning the codebase from Zig to Rust. The project involved rewriting approximately 535,000 lines of code to improve memory safety and eliminate vulnerabilities such as use-after-free and double-free errors by leveraging Rust’s borrow checker.
Notably, the rewrite was completed in four months—significantly faster than the estimated one year—by utilizing AI assistance. Sumner employed a pre-release version of Anthropic’s Claude model to orchestrate approximately 50 dynamic workflows to handle the transpilation and validation against Bun’s existing TypeScript-based test suite, which contains over one million assertions.
While the rewrite addresses technical safety, the broader discussion around Bun continues to compare it to Node.js. While Bun offers advantages in speed and built-in tooling, Node.js maintains a larger ecosystem. The choice between the two runtimes involves significant differences in module resolution, Web APIs, and how they interface with the operating system.
