Buncombe County voters to decide on housing and open space bonds

In the upcoming November 3, 2026, election, Buncombe County voters will consider referendum questions regarding affordable housing and open space conservation bonds.

Supporters of the housing bond highlight the economic impact of previous investments, noting that the 2022 housing bond leveraged local funds to create or initiate over 950 affordable homes. Proponents argue that passing the new bond is essential to meeting a county goal of more than 2,000 new affordable homes by 2030. They suggest the bond could yield approximately 1,000 new homes, potentially creating 1,300 temporary jobs and generating significant tax revenue.

The open space bond aims to protect farmlands, greenways, scenic trails, and drinking water to preserve the region's character. Advocates emphasize that these investments provide stability for essential workers, seniors, and residents with disabilities while fostering long-term economic resilience.
