BUND Announces Nister River Renaturation Plans in Hachenburg

The German environmental group Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland (BUND) is holding a public information session on July 22 in Hachenburg to present its plans for restoring natural sections of the Nister River. Representatives from BUND Rheinland‑Pfalz and Manfred Fetthauer of the Arge Nister Obere Wied e.V. will outline completed renaturation measures, upcoming projects, and the removal of cross‑structures that impede ecological continuity. The initiative aims to incorporate the Nister into Germany’s national river‑restoration program under the EU Water Framework Directive, with goals such as improving flood protection, enhancing water storage, and increasing landscape resilience to heat and drought. BUND’s broader target is to free at least 2,000 km of rivers nationwide, with other rivers like the Elzbach and Glan also slated for inclusion in the plan.
