BUND sues over nuclear fuel production for Russian reactors in Lingen
The environmental association BUND has filed a lawsuit with the Higher Administrative Court of Lüneburg against the state of Lower Saxony. The legal action challenges the approval of a factory expansion in Lingen intended to produce fuel elements for Russian-designed nuclear reactors.
Advanced Nuclear Fuels GmbH, a subsidiary of the French company Framatome, plans to manufacture these components using Russian technology and licenses. The project involves a partnership with a subsidiary of the Russian state-owned corporation Rosatom.
While the Lower Saxony Ministry of Environment granted the permit in July, stating that the Atomic Energy Act did not allow for a rejection and that espionage or sabotage risks were insufficient, BUND and the organization Ausgestrahlt have raised strong objections. They warn of significant geopolitical risks and argue that the cooperation could grant Rosatom access to critical infrastructure in Germany.
